Kriel –<\/strong> The Democratic Alliance (DA) has successfully claimed control of the ward from the African National Congress (ANC) by securing 839 votes during the by-elections held in Kriel on Wednesday, 01 October 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ANC fell short by 30 votes compared to that of the DA, accounting for 33,95% of the ballots cast, uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) followed with 410 votes (17,21%), while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) trailed with 325 votes (13,64%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ward became vacant after ANC councillor Bongani Thwala stepped down amid serious allegations related to housebreaking, assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and attempts to rape a minor. All of these incidents originated in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DA provincial leader Bosman Grobler said before the current administration, the ward was a DA controlled ward. \u201cIn 2021, the ANC removed it from our control, but now we’ve reclaimed what rightfully belongs to us,\u201d he said, adding that the results will elevate their confidence as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 local government elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“More importantly, when we\u2019re not just holding our positions but actively reclaiming wards, it generates significant momentum for us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe’ll leverage this momentum to our advantage going to the local government elections next year.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addressing their decision to join the recent by-elections, Grobler emphasised their commitment to evidence-based practices. \u201cOur party places great importance on scientific data when making decisions. By-elections are significant for us; they involve considerable costs. We don\u2019t just throw a candidate into the mix without proper preparation and support,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When they opt to participate in by-elections, Grobler said they do so with careful planning and budgeting. \u201cIt\u2019s an investment for us, which is precisely why we approach them with strategy. If we believe victory is unlikely in a particular by-election, we won’t waste resources chasing a lost cause.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DA\u2019s new councillor Sussana Hendrina Liebenberg said, \u201cThe moment for transformation has arrived and it\u2019s time for us to roll up our sleeves and get to work in Kriel.
