New speaker, chief whip, and MMCs set to drive development and improve service delivery<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EMALAHLENI \u2013<\/strong> The eMalahleni Local Municipality ushered in a new era of leadership during a special council sitting held in the municipality\u2019s council chambers on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. The session saw the election of key figures tasked with steering the council\u2019s operations and overseeing service delivery ahead of the next local government elections in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cllr Millicent Shabangu was elected as the new Speaker of Council, succeeding her predecessor with a commitment to upholding order, integrity, and effective governance within council proceedings. Alongside her, Cllr Given Koko was appointed as the new Chief Whip, responsible for ensuring party discipline and cohesion among councillors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and service delivery, Executive Mayor Cllr Vusi Nhlapho also announced new appointments to the Mayoral Committee, covering several key directorates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cllr Sizwe Buthelezi was appointed as the MMC for Community Services, bringing with him a renewed focus on community engagement and public welfare initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cllr Thabang Mathebula was named MMC for Technical Services, a vital portfolio that oversees infrastructure development and maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cllr Nombuso Mokwana was appointed as MMC for Developmental Planning, where she is expected to drive spatial development and integrated planning efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cllr Betty Maphosa took on the role of MMC for Environmental and Waste, a critical post amid growing concerns about sustainability and waste management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Nhlapho expressed confidence in the newly appointed leadership, stating that the team represents a blend of experience and fresh perspectives aimed at accelerating the municipality\u2019s development agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe wish them well in their newly appointed positions and look forward to their contributions in strengthening governance and improving the lives of our residents,\u201d said Mayor Nhlapho.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newly elected and appointed officials will serve in their respective roles until the conclusion of the current local government term in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
