KWAMHLANGA \u2013<\/strong> The kidnapping case involving Samuel Mogongwe, the main suspect in the disappearance of a journalist and his partner, was delayed once again on Friday, May 9, at the KwaMhlanga Magistrate\u2019s Court, after Mogongwe alleged he was assaulted by police officers while in custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mogongwe, who worked as an e-hailing driver, told the court that he was beaten by the police and denied medical attention after requesting it. As a result, the court proceedings were paused so that he could be taken for a medical examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mogongwe and his co-accused, Lucky Sikhosana, are facing two charges of kidnapping. Their court appearance was met with further delays, adding to the frustration around the slow progress of the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The matter is linked to the disappearance of journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Mdhluli, who have been missing since February 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, police made a grim discovery \u2014 two sets of skeletal remains in a bushy area in Rust de Winter, Limpopo. The remains are believed to be those of the missing couple, although DNA confirmation is still pending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five suspects, including Mogongwe and Sikhosana, have so far appeared in court on charges of kidnapping and possession of suspected stolen property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Monica Nyuswa, additional charges may follow, depending on the outcome of ongoing investigations and forensic tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe investigations are ongoing,\u201d said Nyuswa. \u201cThere is a possibility of adding more charges, but this will depend on the outcome of the DNA results. The two bodies found still need to undergo medical tests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Condolences have started pouring in, as it is widely believed that the remains are those of Ndlovu and Mdhluli. The South African government has issued a statement conveying its condolences to the families of the victims and the broader media community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both the South African National Editors\u2019 Forum (SANEF) and the National Press Council have also expressed shock and sadness over the tragic development, describing the incident as a heartbreaking loss for journalism and the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
