EMALAHLENI – In a concerted effort to addressing rising incidents of violence in schools, Moruti Makuse Primary School hosted a Safety and Security campaign on Friday, November 22, 2024.
The initiative follows a recent altercation between two learners, however a teacher managed to break up the fight before anyone could sustain any injuries.
This highlighted the urgent need for measures to promote discipline and safety amongst the learners.
Led by councillor Rudolf Mekoa in partnership with the ANC Youth League, the school\u2019s management and the local neighbourhood watch, the campaign seeks to curb violence by fostering greater parental involvement and community support.
Speaking to teachers and learners, Mekoa stressed the importance of instilling discipline at home and in schools, urging parents to play a more active role in their children\u2019s education.
\u201cViolence has no place in our schools. We need to work together as teachers, parents and the community to ensure that our schools remain safe environments where learners can thrive,\u201d he said.
The neighbourhood watch also pledged to assist the school in monitoring activities around the premises to deter potential threats.
Meanwhile, teachers were encouraged to implement strategies to identify and address the root causes of conflict among learners.
Deputy principal Girly Mogale expressed gratitude to Cllr Mekoa and the neighbourhood watch. \u201cThank you for caring enough to help us instil discipline in our learners and ensure that we put a stop to the bullying amongst our pupils,\u201d she said.
The campaign organizers have planned follow-up workshops and engagement sessions with parents and learners to ensure the sustainability of these efforts.
Themba Moloi, school principal, thanked the community for their involvement and reiterated the school\u2019s commitment to providing a safe and nurturing learning environment.
