eMalahleni –<\/strong> Commuters using the eMalahleni taxis have been required to dig deeper into their pockets, following a recent R2 fare increase effected by the Local Taxi Association (LOTA) on Thursday, August 1, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The increase, which comes nearly a year after the last fare hike in September of the previous year, applies across all routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association stated that the decision was driven by the rising costs associated with running a taxi business. These costs include maintenance, fuel prices, and general operational expenses, all of which have been steadily climbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LOTA implemented a new pricing system and warned taxi operators against overcharging or undercharging passengers, noting that disciplinary action would be taken against those who do not comply. “We understand the impact fare increases have on our passengers, but this adjustment is necessary to maintain the quality and safety of our services,” said LOTA spokesperson, Miriam Zulu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“To prevent any discrepancies and ensure passengers are not taken advantage of, LOTA has issued an official fare schedule. We encourage communities to check this list to ensure they are being charged the correct fare. The fare list is available at all taxi ranks and can also be viewed on the LOTA website.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fare increase is expected to affect all routes, impacting daily commuters, students, and workers who rely on taxis as their primary mode of transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some passengers are concerned about the cost, others understand the necessity of the price hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passenger Peter Mokoena shared his thoughts: “It’s disappointing to hear about the increase, especially with the rising cost of living. However, I understand that taxi operators need to cover their costs. As long as the service remains reliable and safe, I support it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another passenger, Thabo Masilela, commented: “This fare increase has caused inconvenience for us as passengers. I know it\u2019s only R2, but with the current state of the economy, that R2 could be used elsewhere.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LOTA also urged passengers to report any discrepancies or unfair practices to their hotline, ensuring a smooth transition to the new fares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
